Rockaway, New Jersey is a township in Morris county which includes the borough of Rockaway, the unincorporated community of White Meadow lake and the Picatinny Arsenal. The area has  a rich history, rolling hills and numerous lakes. The name was given to the area by Dutch settlers in the early 1700s based on the Native American name for the area “Rechouwakie” which translated is “the place of sands”.

Rockaway was the original district in America to mine and work iron. These ironworks assisted the settlers efforts against the English during the American Revolution. By 1776 Morris county was the largest smelting center in the U.S. with many forges and blast furnaces scattered throughout the Rockaway area.

In 1880 the Picatinny Arsenal was established in Rockaway, this was the first U.S. War Department powder depot. The Navy Ordinance Depot followed and was established in 1891. The Military history of the area continued and by 1940 Picatinny was the only plant in the U.S. capable of making large caliber ammo. The Arsenal trained and employed approximately 8,000 people in producing artillery shells, bombs and more. Picatinny Arsenal continues its work today as an armament research and development center.

Today Rockaway Township covers an area of 45.3 square miles and is home to approximately 25,000 people.Real estate opportunities include homes for sale from small starter homes to large  homes as well as  rental apartments. According to the 2010 census the inhabitants were spread across 8,983 households, and 34.4% of these households had children under the age of 18.

Within Rockaway Township lies the unincorporated community of White Meadow Lake. This community is close-knit community and every household is a part of the White Meadow Lake Property Owners Association which cares for the lake, docks, beaches and club house for use by members of the community. The educational needs of younger students in the community are overseen by The Rockaway Township Public Schools. This collection of schools includes five elementary schools for children in fifth grade and down. Students in sixth through eighth grade attend classes at  Copeland Middle School. For High School students the  Morris Hills Regional High School District oversees their education at  Morris Hills High School and Morris Knolls High School.

Rockaway Borough is a walkable town center offering many stores and local business as well as a bus service to NYC.
