Today Bernardsville has a variety of real estate, with homes for sale ranging from quaint cottages, to modern homes and large historic homes and mansions. In early Bernardsville history, the town was known as Vealtown and General Charles Lee rested with his troops over night in mid December of 1776. On the morning of the 13th by the General Charles Lee was captured by General William Alexander,Lord Stirling of the Continental Army. After the Civil War Vealtown/Bernardsville experienced a surge of growth when it became the popular home of many prominent former New Yorkers. Bernardsville was incorporated on March 6, 1924 by an offical act of Congress making it independent from the Bernards Township. The town features a the Olcott Avenue Historic District which has numerous historic buildings including the Olcott Avenue School.

Bernardsville is also known for its wonderful school system, which is over seen by the Somerset Hills Regional School District. This is a regional school district that also serves elementary students of Pea-Pack-Gladstone, Far Hills and high school students of Bedminster as part of an exchange program. Prek-4th grade attend the Bedwell Elementary School, Bernardsville Middle School serves students in grades 5-8, and high schoolers in 9-12 grade attend at Bernards High School.
